Depending on the industry in which a company operates, employees will be willing to work during the holidays to differing degrees. Some prefer not to because it takes time away from the moments they get to spend with families and loved ones, while others don't wish to simply because retail or other similar operations can be quite hectic during that time of year.
Conversely, there are plenty of staff members who enjoy working during busy times or at odd points on the calender because it allows them to make more money for the hours that they work. Of course, this eventuality is predicated on the fact that an organization offers a bit more in terms of salary for work on holidays than it might on other days of the week.
Consequently, it's extremely important for employers to carefully consider what their policies will be regarding employee pay on Christmas, New Year's Day and on other festive days on the calendar. Increased pay for working difficult or unlikely shifts is in and of itself an employee benefit, so employee benefit specialists are important professionals with which to work to strike the proper balance. Failing to do so can result in bitter and unproductive workers when they might be needed the most.
