A survey by Information Strategies reports human resource departments are being expected to do more with fewer resources, Human Resource Executive Online (HREO) reports.

The demands and need for efficiency may increase the importance of HR management software and other aids that help personnel work at a faster pace while remaining effective. The survey of more than 1,000 HR professionals determined 71 percent found their positions more difficult than a year ago, with 51 percent reporting reduced staff.

Many also reported significant funding cuts. Because of reduced manpower within departments, and relatively high national unemployment, many noted difficulties finding top talent among many job applicants.

University of Michigan business professor Dave Ulrich told the source this reduction is partly because companies are seeking more efficient ways of operating, turning to outside service providers or technology and service centers.

Experts indicate the changing conditions make it increasingly important for HR personnel to work effectively with business strategy to ensure goals are aligned and focus on initiatives most likely to be beneficial. According to Ulrich, HR departments which focus on talent, organizational culture and leadership will perform better.
