While most voting Americans believe that employers should continue to offer worksite benefits like health insurance, they also believe that they should be allowed to choose plans on an individual basis, according to a recent survey administered by Rasmussen Reports.
The survey, which was conducted over the phone, found that 87 percent of likely respondents felt that they should be allowed to select their own health insurance, providing it did not cost their employer more money in the long run.
Furthermore, workers stated that if they selected plans that cost less than other employee benefit options, that they, and not their employer, should benefit from the cost savings, according to Rasmussen Reports.
While it may be a good idea to involve employees in the benefit selection process, benefit consultants should also be sure to properly educate staff members about their benefit packages so they can make informed decisions about which options to pick up and how they can best utilize the benefits they have.
With health insurance exchanges on the way in 2014, many consumers may be looking toward the online health insurance storehouses for a cheaper deal. While 66 percent of those polled by Rasmussen felt that insurance costs would decrease if they could hand pick their plans, many may not realize that those packages may not include key elements that employer-sponsored benefit packages do.
