A new poll indicates that many business owners have not taken the steps necessary to protect their human resource software, leaving the company's information vulnerable to a potential hack attempt.
According to the internet security firm Symantec, more than three in every four business owners – 77 percent – say they believe their company is safe from cyber criminals. However, nearly 85 percent say they haven't developed a cyber security plan that would help diminish the deleterious effects that could result if attacked.
Michael Kaiser, executive director of the national Cyber Security Alliance, indicated that contingency plans are crucial.
"We want U.S. small businesses to understand they cannot completely remain safe from cyber threats if they do not take the necessary precautions," said Kaiser. "A data breach or hacking incident can really harm [small- and medium-sized businesses] and unfortunately lead to a lack of trust from consumers, partners and suppliers."
Business owners may want to advise their employees about how they can protect themselves from cyber attacks by pointing out what to do, as well as what not to do, when performing internet searches or other types of online activity.
