While HR compliance may be an issue that every business owner needs to be concerned about as it relates to the function of their employees in the workplace, the leading driver of employee engagement is management transparency, according to the results of a new report.

In its 2013 Employee Engagement Survey, human resources and talent management firm TINYpulse found that how productive and involved workers are in the office setting has a lot to do with employees being clear about what the mission is for the company in terms of goals and values.

"Not only are capital markets demanding transparency, employees want the same from their leadership," said David Niu, CEO of the Seattle, Wash.-based HR firm. "The cost of improving transparency is almost zero, and we are seeing an increasing number of companies using transparency as an advantage when attracting and retaining top talent."

Additionally, even though a positive relationship between a company supervisor and their employees is important, it's not as crucial as the bonds that co-workers themselves form between one another. The study found that a workers' relationships with their colleagues was over 23 percent more correlated to their level of contentment versus the connection they had with their bosses.

Retaining and recruiting skilled employees is something more business owners are making a priority in 2014. Roughly one-fourth of companies in a recent CareerBuilder.com poll said that they will add full-time, permanent employees to their payrolls in the coming 12 months, declining marginally from 2013, when 26 percent indicated the same. At 30 percent, hiring managers in the sales sector were the most likely to hire, followed by information technology, customer service, production and administrative.
