It may seem simple enough to procure employee benefits for an entire workforce, but the ins and outs of coverage might cause situations in which employers, personnel or both are severely disappointed. In such situations, it would have been better if everyone involved had known exactly what events trigger coverage and how employees can protect themselves from harm.

For example, according to the Metropolitan News-Enterprise, a court decision recently awarded a Los Angeles fire fighter full benefits after injuring himself. The harm occurred when he fell off of a ladder performing yard work at home. The reason that the benefits remain in place is because he lived on Catalinia Island as required by his employers. Therefore, the fact that he was hurt while tending to his work-mandated home was grounds for full benefits coverage.

This is important for employers to keep in mind because they need to make sure that such arguments don't make it to Courts of Appeal, like this case did. Everything should be neatly and clearly outlined such that all unusual tasks and situations that are required of staff won't have unforeseen consequence related to their benefits plan. Consult with a benefits specialists to refine and examine the terms of all coverage options.
