According to a recent survey by an independent research firm, 39 percent of workers interviewed stated they are more challenged by their workload during the holidays.

This was only slightly below the 44 percent who said they experienced no significant difference. According to researchers, the results show a significant number of employees may have more stress to cope with over the holidays.

At the same time, more than 40 percent reported their current workloads are too heavy to begin with. The survey targeted office workers, and researchers noted the data illustrates the difficulty many employees may have balancing workplace demands and needs with personal and family priorities, especially during the holidays.

The researchers note workers may be particularly stretched depending on their business sector. Accounting and finance employees, for example, often must complete quarterly, annual and semiannual tasks at the end of each year, contributing to a heavier workload for departments and individuals.

Human resource systems and management may be able to help by ensuring employees are provided with appropriate resources and promoting healthy time management. For example, flexible schedules may be a useful and appreciated tool for employees who do not need to be on-site to work.
