The results of a recent report may prompt some business owners to consider whether they should get in touch with employee benefit consultants.
According to PricewaterhouseCooper's Health Research Institute, more states are expected to reach out to the federal government to help set up the insurance exchanges that are required to be in effect by November 16.
Thus far, 13 states have indicated they will run their own insurance exchanges without the assistance of federal health officials. The remainder, meanwhile, are expected to include the federal government in the implementation of the exchanges.
"Newly created exchanges represent the biggest insurance expansion since Medicare in 1965," said Kelly Barnes, health industries leader at PwC. "The exchanges will serve a group of people who may be purchasing insurance for the first time."
Depending on the quality of the policy, many workers may opt out of their employer-sponsored plans and seek health coverage through their state's exchange program. Employee benefits consulting may give business owners the information they need to convey to their workers about which option is best.
