Director of finance and risk management Justin Saunders of Madix recently told BLR the company was faced with rapidly increasing healthcare costs when it determined an on-site clinic was the solution.

The company, a manufacturer of store fixtures, racks, displays and related products, was reportedly looking at a 2010 budget in which healthcare costs would increase substantially over previous levels.

Since the previous levels were already approaching a record $6 million, Saunders looked for a new solution. He found outside help, taking advantage of employee benefit consulting and related services to design the new, free clinic.

The clinic minimizes costs by treating minor conditions, managing chronic conditions and providing preventive care. These proactive measures keep health problems relatively minor, preventing escalation.

According to Saunders, the approach has been successful in lowering costs so far, and he believes it will demonstrate further benefits as improved employee health contributes to higher productivity over time.
