According to a recent statewide survey, the majority of small businesses in New York are pleased with the implementation of a new state healthcare exchange.

The survey found only 27 percent of the state's small businesses reported doing well and three-quarters believe the business climate is flawed. Despite this, most agreed that offering health insurance is a good way to attract and retain good employees and more than half of those who do not offer insurance said they might in the future, if circumstances permit.

Of those who do offer insurance, more than half said they spend too much time shopping for and comparing coverage and administering benefits. This may be why 84 percent were in favor of the proposed small business exchange for the state.

Responding to the proposal, more than three-quarters of those surveyed said they would consider using an exchange when enrolling employees in health benefits programs, and 60 percent said they would be more likely to offer coverage if an exchange were available. Many indicated having an exchange would allow them to devote more time to other pursuits, such as growing their business.
