A new study indicates that many of today's workers default to the same employee benefits they had in the previous year when it comes time to renew their health plans.

According to human resources firm Aon Hewitt, more than half – 55 percent – of employees revert to selecting the same insurance package that they had in the previous period during renewal.

Craig Rosenberg, national leader of health and welfare benefits administration, indicated that these reflexive types of decisions can wind up costing consumers in the long run.

"It is easy to fall back on the status quo and assume that your 2012 benefits choices will continue to meet your needs in 2013," said Rosenberg. "But changes to family health care needs, employer plan offerings and costs make it important for workers to reevaluate their selections every year."

Employers may want to encourage their workers to make sure they review their options before making a decision. Recent statistics from Aon Hewitt reveal that healthcare costs are expected to rise in 2013, with workers shouldering much of the added expense.
